A late morning run in the sun. I’ll take it. Shorts and a short-sleeve shirt. First day in a fully summer clothes, apart from the race eight days ago. Good to get out when it’s warmer. Last Saturday night/Sunday morning it was around 40 degrees. Not heat training weather at all.

Today’s run was a 5.11 mile hills route. Pace was 8:50. Weight was 147.2. Total climb was about 275 feet.

Hills Saturday. Nice, cool, breezy and clear morning. One climb up a road at Blue Hills. It’s about 0.87 miles and an average 9% grade.

Today’s run was a 1.96 mile warm-up and climb. Pace was 11:23. Weight was 146.2. Total climb was 430 feet.

First test run after the race. No issues. Everything was really sore on Monday, to the point where going down stairs was iffy.

Nice mid-day weather for a short run. Temperature around 57 and sunny. Windy, though (gusts to about 20 mph). Whatever.

Today’s short run was a loop around the house, including a short 10+% grade hill. Pace was 9:12. Weight was 146.0. Total climb was about 115 feet.

First day back after the race on Sunday. Everything was really sore for a few days. Still is, a bit. Time to get back after it. Lake Placid is in less than five weeks.

Today was a mild 24-minute workout on the indoor trainer. Weight was 146.0.

Race day. Terrible conditions. Bright and sunny, somewhat humid, and temperature in the mid-70’s. I’ve been training in temperatures in the low 40’s. There was a chance for rain but it moved through the night before. Whatever. No excuses. I stopped to get some water at most stations later in the race and dumped most it on my head.

I saw a woman collapse right at the 25-mile point. Jarring. The medical people said that lots of half-marathon people had trouble. I wasn’t really dehydrated since I run with a CamelBak.

The race wasn’t too bad though. I had to mix in walking and running for the last half, but I found that I could really push for a bit before taking the break to catch my breath. Very odd. I’m thinking it was too much of a focus on bike work and not enough long-distance work. Interesting. Mix both together sounds like the way forward.

Today’s race was the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon. Total time was about 4:36:00, or a 10:32 pace.

Today was a mild early morning for a short run. Nice and mild, and dry. Today’s the travel day to the race on Sunday, so it’d be better to not have to pack soggy shoes.

The run was an easy, “last run before the race” type of run. “Tapering” before a race is tricky.

Today’s run was a 2.18 mile rather flat route. Pace was 9:52. Total climb was about 90 feet.

Training Log 05/02/2024

Last good workout before the race on Sunday. It was a bit of a “push the pace” day. Not crazy, but more of a “practice pressing on the pace” run. Practice the mindset of “just keep going at this pace.”

Today’s run was a 13.12 mile rolling hills route. Pace was 9:22. Weight was 148.0. Total climb was about 645 feet.

A short workout today on the indoor trainer. It was a long drive back from Cincinnati. There’s tired from a workout and there’s physically & mentally tired from a trip. Listen to your body. Take a break when it says to.

Today’s ride was a short 15.8 minute workout.

A better early morning route for a run. Mapping out routes when you’re on the road is always a challenge. Cool weather, good pavement (or at least I didn’t see the potholes). Not much of a distance, though. Not the best a week before a race.

Today’s run was a 3.15 mile route with long grades. Not steep, but long grades. Pace was 9:51. Total climb was about 235 feet.

Oh, what a fun run in Cincinnati. Lots of traffic on a few narrow, winding roads. Nice weather, but not the time to be out on the road. I wanted to get up a bit earlier but we were really, really tired after a 15-hour drive yesterday. OK — do what I can.

Today’s run was a 3.16 mile loop around west from U. of Cincinnati, including a 0.45 mile climb at an average grade of about 11%. Pace was about 10:26, but that’s just a guess (forgot to start my watch). Total climb was about 340 feet.
